Insert moulding is a process that can be done either at the time of the moulding process, or inserted after the part as been made as a post moulding operation.

If included as part of the moulding process, inserts are loaded in to the tool and the plastic is moulded around them. This can either be done by the machine operator or by a robot. If the inserts are applied to the product as part of a post moulding operation, they can usually be applied at any time after the part is made.

Considerations need to be taken as to which way is more suitable for the product as it can mean a varied cycle time when loading inserts by hand. To get the best quality mouldings, it is not advised to allow the cycle time to vary from shot to shot as this allows the material to degrade in the barrel.

Typical products that are insert moulded are threaded brass inserts or metal screws.

You can also use another injection moulded part from a different plastic.
If you are needing parts with differing properties then this could be an option for you.
